Background of the Study
Syntactic processing involves the construction of grammatical structures during language comprehension. For Igbo, a language with complex syntactic patterns and flexible word order, understanding the neural correlates of syntactic processing is essential for elucidating language comprehension mechanisms. Recent neuroimaging studies have identified brain regions such as the left inferior frontal gyrus and the posterior temporal lobe as critical for syntactic processing (Ikechukwu, 2023). This study assesses the neural correlates of syntactic processing in Igbo among college students by employing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during sentence comprehension tasks. Participants will be presented with syntactically complex and simple Igbo sentences, and brain activation patterns will be compared to determine how syntactic complexity influences neural activity. The findings are expected to contribute to cognitive models of language processing, inform language pedagogy, and support the development of targeted interventions to improve syntactic comprehension in Igbo (Chukwudi, 2024; Nwankwo, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Although syntactic processing is crucial for language comprehension, little is known about its neural correlates in the Igbo language among college students. Existing research often relies on data from other languages, which may not fully capture the syntactic complexity of Igbo. This gap limits our understanding of how the brain processes complex syntactic structures in Igbo, thereby hindering the development of effective language instruction and remediation strategies (Ikechukwu, 2023; Chukwudi, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To identify neural activation patterns during syntactic processing in Igbo.
2. To compare brain responses to complex versus simple sentences.
3. To propose educational interventions to improve syntactic comprehension.
Research Questions:
1. What are the neural correlates of syntactic processing in Igbo?
2. How do activation patterns differ between complex and simple sentences?
3. What implications do these findings have for language education?
Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it explores the neural basis of syntactic processing in Igbo, providing insights that can enhance language teaching and remediation strategies among college students. The findings will contribute to more effective, neuroscience-informed language instruction (Ikechukwu, 2023; Nwankwo, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing neural correlates of syntactic processing in Igbo among college students using fMRI and behavioral measures.
Definitions of Terms:
• Syntactic Processing: The cognitive process of constructing grammatical structures.
• Neural Correlates: Brain regions and activities associated with cognitive functions.
• Igbo: A language spoken predominantly in southeastern Nigeria.
